I’d been out walking around Wiltshire for a couple of hours taking photos and was wearily returning home. This swan was resting by the canal on the Caen Hill locks. He is a male – apparently you can tell by the size of the “blackberry” at the base of its bill – male bigger, female smaller. He was eating grass hungrily and appeared completely unfazed by my arrival. I don’t really like swans. I have bad memories of viscous nips when I waitered at the Black Horse pub in Devizes. In the summer, pub goers sit on park benches placed about two feet away from the canal edge. It’s a little hard to believe but swans necks on average can reach to about three feet… I positioned myself about four feet away and managed to capture the swan as it lifted it’s head before continuing his meal.
