Travelling along the road in Barnsbury, London I encountered Jon outside of a tool hire warehouse which was closed for the weekend. Having just finished my photography course I was keen to meet some interesting new people and take their portraits. I’d walked past Jon who was sitting on a camp bed, smoking a rollie. He was alone in a massive car park; a character in front of a large clear wall. I was struck by the scene and wandered over to introduce myself. I asked him if he would mind me taking his photo. He answered with a wry smile… ‘Yes, of course you can… but it’s going to cost you.”. I agreed that was fair and walked to the nearest off licence to get some cash. I returned, offering him £2 for his photo. “Did you get some tobacco as well?” he asked to which I said no. “That’s okay” he said, “I would prefer some vodka!”. We laughed and negotiated further until Jon agreed and began dressing up for the photo. He added his chain, scarf and walking cane to his outfit and posed for the camera. Within a couple of minutes I’d moved on thanking him for his time – i was in a hurry otherwise would have stayed longer but I enjoyed our brief chat and photo shoot. So here is Jon – dressed to impress.
